You Are Light

“I am Light”

Do me a favor. Re-read that title. When you say it to yourself, is there a spark of familiarity? Does it feel like a distant memory that you’ve almost forgotten? Do you feel your heart respond when you say these three little words? Maybe the mind expresses some doubt but the heart knows the joyous truth in this statement.

“I am light.”

There are times when this simple truth is lost to us. It becomes obscured by the busyness of life, the chattering of our minds, the weight of our mistakes, our missteps, our imperfections. Sometimes, we forget. And sometimes, we try to tell ourselves that this truth is not OUR truth. It belongs to others who are more perfect, who make fewer mistakes, who stumble less often, who have quieter minds and more disciplined lives. And it is in these moments of doubt that these three little words are a powerful ally. When you find yourself feeling heavy or dark, try this practice. “I am light.” Repeat it to yourself as many times as you have to until you feel that spark of recognition. Carry it with you throughout your day; waiting in line, driving to work, eating a meal, walking the dog, brushing your teeth. “I am light.” Turn the small tasks of daily life into an empowering self-care ritual. “I am light.” Reclaim your radiance. As the Sufi poet Hafiz put it-“I wish I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being.”

You are light.
